Can I Start Playing again after high ankle sprain?
I hurt my ankle about three weeks ago during a soccer game, and the doctor said it was a bad high ankle sprain...it's been three weeks, and its looking a lot better. although there is still some swelling, a lot of it has gone down. It still hurts to move it up and down, but i can walk on it pretty well...
my doctor wants me to be out for another week, and not try running on it for a week and a half...does that seem right???
Absolutely. Why are you looking to create more down time by returning to playing before you are ready. If there is still pain and swelling then you are not ready to play. I hate to say this but the chances of you being able to play in another week don't look good. Unless you are a professional player why risk further problems. The one thing that you could ask the doctor is if you could start doing deep water running. That is where you wear a special flotation vest and run in a deep water pool. Since there is no group reaction forces present it will help to keep your legs strong and work the muscles and ligaments without danger of further injury. Returning to sports should only be allowed when you are able to run a tight figure 8 without pain and at full speed. If there is any pain or instability then you are not ready to return. Soak the foot in a large pale of ice water for fifteen to twenty minutes per hour. While in the water write the alphabet using your foot. As soon as you are totally pain free start light resistance exercises.
